The Giver, Graphic Novel by P. Craig Russell (Illustrations) and Lois Lowry (Review)

The hit classic and much beloved novel, The Giver by Lois Lowery gets to be shared in a brand new medium: graphic novel. This graphic novel closely follows the story for the first book in the series (which might mean the whole series might be getting made into graphic novels, we'll have to see), with some fat trimmed off here and there to make the graphic novel feasible and more of an easy read. This is a story that is great for middle school and high school classrooms, and this new edition would be great for students who are more visually inclined. It might be a nice stepping stone into reading the full-blown novel.
This is going to be a difficult and mildly incomplete review. The reason? The ARC I received of this graphic novel was black and white, which is a bit of the problem since a huge aspect of the to-be published version is that colour is added the the panels for effect, in key ways, as the story progresses. The colour is a part of the story telling in this novel, so without it I did not get to fully experience the graphic novel as it should be. From what I gathered, this will be a very visual story. If I properly guessed where they were going to introduce colour correctly, then each use of colour is quite impactful. My best review to the material I received is that The Giver is FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!!!
