Being Jamie Baker (Review)

Being Jamie Baker (Jamie Baker, #1) by Kelly Oram
An accident that should end in tragedy instead gives seventeen-year-old Jamie Baker a slew of uncontrollable superhuman abilities. To keep her secret safe Jamie socially exiles herself, earning the title of Rocklin High's resident ice queen. But during a supercharged encounter with star quarterback Ryan Miller she literally kisses anonymity goodbye. Now the annoyingly irresistible Ryan will stop at nothing to melt the heart of the ice queen and find out what makes her so special. Unfortunately, Ryan is not the only person on to her secret. Will Jamie learn to contain her unstable powers before being discovered by the media or turned into a government lab rat? More importantly, can she throw Ryan Miller off her trail before falling in love with him?

I didn't know what to expect going into this book. I mean seriously, a book about a superhero.... created by toxic waste??  Been there, done that. Needless to say, I was very skeptical about the premise of the novel. All I could think of was that how this book could be a disaster. I could not stand the frigging classic origin story to boot, I was concerned it was going to be a literacy nightmare! Luckily all is not what it seemed, and by sticking to reading it, I found my new favorite book ever. HUZZAH!

All I can say is how simply AMAZING this book is. Love it!! It had me from the very first page to the very last one, and left me crying for more. This is a witty, comedic love story that captivates the hearts of the readers and brings them to a magical wonderland where superheroes exist and the heroes reign supreme. The author took the parts of superheroes we all love, added witty comedy to burst your gut with laughter, and a male love interest that will melt your heart in a second, to make the best piece of teen literature ever!!
BOOYA! HAPPY DANCE!!
This book was nothing like I had expected. Filled with plot twists and turns, ups and downs, all I could do was go along for the ride. The relationships, albeit between Ryan and Jamie or Jamie and her entire school, are simply heart stopping intense and are lovingly developed by Kelly. Jamie, the protagonist, is an outcast at her school, she is the Ice Queen, she has super electricity powers, she is kick butt, and she has no control whatsoever of her abilities.
“Oops,” I whispered as I met Ryan’s worried gaze. “Sorry about that.”
“Are you kidding? That was great!”
“Great? I knocked out the electricity.”
“But you didn’t blow up my room.”

Jamie and Ryan are extremely well developed characters that bring joy to your heart to read about. Jamie is a kick but heroine, and  Ryan is one heck of a persistent man. This is just a  taste of Ryan
“Are you going to put on your old cheer uniform?”
Ryan was a little too excited by the thought of me in a costume, so I squashed that idea, and fast.
“In your dreams.”
“Not exactly.” Ryan grinned wickedly. “In my dreams you’re usually dressed like Wonder Woman.”
Ugh. I wondered how long it would take for him to start in on the superhero crap. Obviously, not long. I was not amused, but Ryan seemed to think
himself hilarious. I could also tell by the look on his face that he was quite confident he’d have me in costume one day. “Never gonna happen,” I
assured him. “Ever.”
And of course he responded with that classic, cocky smile. “Just like you were never gonna be my girlfriend, right?”

After being shot down by Jamie Baker a.k.a “The Ice Queen” many, many times, he never gives up because all he sees is the woman he loves. And unfortunately for him, all she sees is an attractive guy that she has to protect from her powers. She really likes Ryan, but what can you do when your superpower is electricity, and you can't control it?? I’ll leave it at that so I don’t spoil anything, but all I can say is that I recommend this book 100% to all readers who love a captivating read that you cannot put down.
It’s a heart stopping, action packed, soul melting, brain exploding, and mind blowing book!! FIVE STARS!!
