Book Blitz: Zinnia by Christina Bauer!

Zinnia
by Christina Bauer
(Angelbound Offspring #3)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: July 30th 2019
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
As the last dragon shifter, I live alone, hiding in one of Earth’s sacred deserts. My human handlers tell me that I have no parents, no name, and no purpose other than to train for battle and one day become a vessel for the reincarnation of Chimera, the greatest dragon shifter of all. Sadly, Chimera’s rebirth will mean my own death. But my handlers say this sacrifice is a noble fate that will rebuild the dragon shifter world.
I shall die on my seventeenth birthday. That’s five days from now.
Then I hear music thumping across the desert. I take my mortal form, follow the sound, and find humans dancing in what they call a rave. There is a stage and a rock band. One thing quickly becomes clear: Unlike the audience, the musicians are dragon shifters, just like me. And one of them, the guitar player Rhodes, makes my knees turn watery. The lead singer, Kaps, has something strangely familiar about her.
It all adds up to one conclusion: My handlers lied to me. I’m not the last of my kind. Memories reappear. I had parents once. Portia and Tempest. I even had a name. Zinnia. Perhaps I have a reason to live as well. I step past the dancing humans to confront the players.
I will find out the full truth, no matter what.
EXCERPT:
Zinnia – Age Nine
Chapter One
Tucking my unicorn comforter under my chin, I come to a big decision.
Naptime is for losers.
I may only be nine—well, almost ten—but I know one thing: there are way too many rules for dragon princesses like me. For starters, we’re supposed to take naps every bleeding afternoon. No way. Napping is for babies. That’s why I’m sneaking out today to see my best friend, LT.
Twisting under my covers, I check out my bedroom. There are pink curtains, white furniture, and the royal crest of Furonium over the door. My parents rule all the dragon shifters, so that crest-thingy hangs everywhere. My sisters, Kaps and Huntress, lie in their bunk beds across the room. So you know, my family stays in human form most of the time. No dragon caves for us, thank you very much. Those places have bats.
Squinting, I look at my sisters more closely. Are they really out of it? Can I sneak away? Like always, Kaps lays half-off the top bunk. Wisps of brown hair hang over her mouth, blowing in and out with her snores. I shake my head.
Even asleep, my twin is noisy.
Meanwhile, Huntress rests curled up on her side. Her shoulders rise and fall silently. Huntress never lets out a sound, even when she’s snoozing.
That settles it.
Both my sisters are totally zonked.
Time to go.

Shifters and Glyphs (Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #2) by Christina Bauer (Review)

Another instalment in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum, in Shifters and Glyphs, the story continues where Bryar Rose and her mate, Knox, continue their hunt for the fountain of magic before it is too late. As Bry tries to translate the egyptian runes from an ancient text, a new enemy enters the ring with aim to get the magic Bry is chasing after. They follow her through her dreams and wipe her memories in the morning.
It was fine. The writing style was fairly consistent to the first book in the series, the characters were still developing, which was nice, and the story expanded the world and added to it. My only real reservation about this book was that I got bored. It was unfortunate situation, but I just didn't feel drawn into this one and just didn't fall in love with it. I'm honestly not sure why, but I just am not pumped over this book. It hits most of the notes, but was just missing something. That extra push/hook that would really have helped this book over the hump, but in the end, I felt Shifters and Glyphs was just fine and give it the rating of FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!

The Brutal Time

(Angelbound Origins, #6)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: September 17th 2019
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult
Myla Lewis loves kicking demon ass. Sadly, now that she’s the Great Scala as well as Queen of the demon hunting thrax, there’s no time to battle baddies. Sure, it’s great to rule alongside her main squeeze Lincoln—and their baby Maxon is adorbs—but what about some demon killing fun?
Then Myla gets a chance to fight tons of evildoers, but it’s in the worst way imaginable. All the demon-hunting thrax disappear, except for Lincoln. Even Octavia and sweet baby Maxon vanish. With the demon hunters gone, the worldwide population of big bads goes berserk. Talk about a nightmare.
Turns out, Lucifer left behind another magickal trinket that’s causing trouble. This time, it’s his signet ring that has changed the past, preventing the thrax from ever organizing in the first place. To bring back the thrax and their family, Myla and Lincoln must travel back in history—to the era called the Brutal Time—and try to convince the pre-thrax peoples to team up. Trouble is, these folks already have a powerful leader, the Red Scourge, and that creep doesn’t want his people hunting down demons. Nope. The Red Scourge has only one goal.
Kill Myla and Lincoln, fast.

Eight Rules For Writing Kickass Heroines
By Christina Bauer, author

I’ve written more than a dozen YA fantasy books with kickass heroines, most recentlyCRADLED(the epilogue to my Beholder series.) Over time, I’ve developed a list of rules for writing kickass heroines. Mostly, I have a ton of tropes I work hard to avoid. Take a look below and you’ll see what I mean…

RULE ONE.
No whining, hiding, or mopingfor heroines. Whining characters are really easy to write, but they are annoying as hell to read.

RULE TWO.
Heroinesdon’t run away from troubleunless there is no other choice. And if they do run, heroines never trip and fall over branches and dumb crap like that. Sure, they can have other complications—like running out of ammo, for example—but tripping is just stupidpants.

RULE THREE.
Warrior heroines always give people a chance before killing them. This is what I call the Bugs Bunny rule. Bugs always gave his antagonists a chance before declaring “Of course you realize this means war.”

RULE FOUR.
Heroines have a reaction to the taking of any life. It’s just creepy to kill and walk away without having any feels about it.

RULE FIVE.
The heroine must always have a plan. When there are setbacks, she regroups, thinks it over, and comes up with another strategy. NOTE: This one is really hard to me. In my first drafts, I tend to have a very passive heroine. Then I go back and give her action.

RULE SIX.
Heroines have a life goal other than getting a significant other. Romance is important, but it’s not the only thing going on.

RULE SEVEN.
Heroines who have a life goal outside of getting their significant other, still get to have romance in their lives. In other words, no one gets stripped of their femininity just because they have an atypical life goal for a romance novel

RULE EIGHT.
Super-heroines make a conscious choice to develop their powers. It really bugs me when people get gifted super powers, don’t do much work, and yet can wield those energies forever like a pro. At some point, we all need to buckle down and do our homework. IN the Beholder series, the heroine works for five years to develop her mage skills. BOOM.

So there you have it, my eight rules for writing kickass heroines. And in my books, kicking ass doesn’t just mean fighting with fists or swords. It means having a moral center to what you do and sticking to that, no matter what.

EXCERPT:
“That’s why packs have Alphas,” says Knox. “You need to set her loose, and then, let her attack me.”
Every inch of my body goes on alert. “Attack you? Why?”
“Your wolf has been through a lot. Ritual fighting is how wolves work out their place in the pack. Your wolf needs a firm hand.”
I stare at my palm. “Firm hand?”
“I’m not talking about physical power here. I’m talking magic. My power is Alpha energy, but you’ve got your own magic. Once I subdue your wolf, I think you’ll get the idea.”
My head feels woozy. “Ritual combat? Really?”
“Yes. Release your wolf and attack me. Now.”
I hug my elbows. “I’m not sure. If I’m patient, my inner wolf might just calm down on her own.”
“That’s not how wolves work, even when they aren’t of the magical variety. And a werewolf? Our animals are far more intense. I’m your Alpha, and if I let this go on for one more minute, I’m putting you at risk.”
Something in his tone sets my nerves on edge. “Meaning?”
“Your wolf will go feral. When it happens, it’s fast and intense. Your wolf will take over and you’ll disappear.”
I suck in a shaky breath. “She wouldn’t.”
My wolf’s voice sounds in my head. “We will run! I demand we shift NOW!
That manic tone to her voice is now higher than ever before. Every inch of my body trembles with the urge to shift. I reply to my wolf in my mind.
Didn’t you hear what Knox said?” Normally, my wolf can’t help but listen in on most of my conversations. “Our mate thinks you’re going feral.
Mate?” The manic tone to her voice hikes up an octave. “We have no mate. All we have is the need to run.
A chill runs up my spine. “You don’t remember our mate?
No mate! Run, now!
My blood chills. No matter what happens, my wolf always knows her mate. In fact, my usual complaint is that she won’t shut up about him.
This is really happening. My wolf is going feral.
All of a sudden, it’s like I can’t pull in enough air. “You’re right. My inner wolf is losing her mind.”
“Hey, I won’t let that happen.” Knox rests his hands on my shoulders. “Breathe, Bry.”
It takes serious concentration, but I slow my racing pulse a little. “Okay.”
“Now, you need to set your wolf loose and trust me. Can you do that, yeah?”
“I can try.”
“Good.” Knox pulls off his dress shirt over his head and tosses it aside. “Set her loose.”
Normally, the urge to shift is a constant tug of war between me and my wolf. Most times, all it takes is for me to stop fighting the urge to shift. After that, I turn furry. So that’s what I do now—I drop my guard and let my wolf take over.
