An Angelbound Prequel Novella by Christina Bauer
As the High Prince of the demon-fighting thrax, Lincoln knows he must marry for political gain. Not that he minds. For all of his eighteen years, Lincoln's been bound to his duty. Fighting demons is his life, and he's never given romance a second thought. Instead, the High Prince lives for the days when he leaves his hidden realm to fight demons on Earth.
Then, everything changes.
Lincoln and his nobles become forced to visit Purgatory, the home of quasi-demons (who are mostly human with a bit of demonic DNA). Here Lincoln spies Myla Lewis, a lady warrior who enflames his heart, ignites his interest, and inspires his respect. Trouble is, Myla's also a quasi. By thrax law, Lincoln must kill anything demonic-not date them. For the first time in his life, Lincoln wonders if he'll follow his duty…or heed the demands of his heart.

READ CHAPTER 1:
I am Lincoln Vidar Osric Aquilus, High Prince of the Thrax. My people are renowned as the greatest demon hunters across Heaven, Hell, Earth, Purgatory, and the Dark Lands. At eighteen years old, I've killed precisely one thousand four hundred and thirty-seven demons in hand-to-hand combat, more than any other thrax in history. All of which leads to a single inescapable conclusion.
I can make it through this breakfast with my mother.
At least, I think I can.
"You haven't touched your eggs, my son." Mother spears a strawberry off her plate. After many years of maternal encounters, I've learned to keep my mouth closed in situations like this one. Mother will bring up her true concerns when she's good and ready.
In reply, I merely maintain her stare. We've an odd relationship, but a close one. We're both natural schemers, so neither wants to pass up a test of intelligence and charm.
"Perhaps you dislike formal breakfasts," says Mother as she gestures to my tunic.
"I'm fine with wearing royal garb to meals. Rest assured, all my Batman costumes are safely packed away." As a child, I fought hard to dress as a human superhero. Unlike demon killing, that was one battle I ultimately lost.
"So you say." A small smile rounds Mother's mouth. "Those tunics hide quite a lot."
"True. I've a Bohemian Rhapsody T-shirt on under this thing."
"I have no idea what that is, but I'm pleased to see you turned out so well."
This morning, I'm dressed in a velvet tunic, leather pants, and tall boots. Meanwhile, Mother looks regal and lethal in her black velvet gown. She has porcelain skin, delicate features, and an all-knowing glare that reduces hardened warriors to mush.
Needless to say, I'm pleased that her glare has softened. I must remember to work Batman into our conversations more often.
For a few minutes, Mother and I continue our breakfast in silence. It would be pleasant, except for the setting. Our new feasting hall is located in Purgatory.
Yes, Purgatory.
This place combines the worst of a rundown human suburb with the best of a rotting Dumpster. The sky is constantly cloudy with two types of weather: rainy and about to rain. It's part of the magic of this realm that the weather is always dreary. Plus, the sky never reveals the sun or moon, and even if it did, those celestial bodies follow different patterns than they do in other realms.
Closing my eyes, I let my thoughts return to the glittering caverns of my homeland. As a rule, thrax live underground on Earth in the realm of Antrum. For some reason, the oracle angel, Verus, has demanded the royal family-and our noble entourage-move to Purgatory for a short period of time. This wasn't a popular idea, but the oracle's word is law, so we arrived here three months ago. Until Verus sets us loose, our days will be spent in tents and wooden halls like this one.
I scan the empty benches around me and sigh. It's hard being separated from the bulk of my people. Quiet breakfasts like this only make things worse. Usually our feasting hall is packed with thrax sharing breakfast at communal tables. However, today Mother insisted on having a family-only morning meal, which in this case translates into me, Mother, and a half-dozen terrified workers. Father should get here any minute now. I can only hope he arrives before Mother's temper returns.
As if in reply to my thoughts, Mother spears another wilted strawberry with a vengeance. Looks like her temper will resurface before Father does. Bugger.
"You never answered my question," says Mother. "You haven't touched your food." She spears a grape with such force the entire table wobbles.
"Careful there," I say. "You'll bring down the roof down."
"One perk of being queen. I can bring down roofs and no one says a thing."
At those words, the half-dozen servants in the room visibly shiver.
There's no question about the general topic of Mother's angst, either. It's always the same issue: the House of Acca. That tribe is the largest and most troublesome of all thrax.
At this point, problems with Acca could fall into one of two categories.
One, Mother might be worried about my impending marriage contract with Acca's most eligible noblewoman, Lady Adair. If Mother thinks there are problems on that front, she would be sorely mistaken. It's a business arrangement, nothing more. I'd regret that, but I'm a prince. I always knew I'd never marry for love.
Two-and far more worrisome-would be if Mother discovered my ongoing scheme against Aldred, the dreaded Earl of Acca himself. I've many issues with the Earl, but my largest is how Aldred keeps leading his warriors into ill-planned demon attacks on the Earth's surface. Thanks to the Earl of Acca, hundreds of good thrax meet bad ends every week. I meet with the families of the fallen, trying to provide comfort as their worlds fall apart. So many tears and ruined lives…and all so the Earl can prove his so-called prowess in battle.
It's outrageous.
Even worse, my parents have forbidden me from doing anything to stop Aldred's bloodshed. Per some ancient treaty, if I interfere with Aldred's rights to lead his troops, then the Earl has the unmitigated right to execute me on the spot.
And as every royal knows, execution threats and breakfast do not mix well.

EXCERPT:
I put on a sweatband and sneakers and brought down a water bottle. My plan was to pedal non-stop for an hour. I figured I could do it, since I was used to riding my own bike, and how different could this bike be? I should lose at least one pound that way, I told myself. So if I use the bike every day, in fifteen days I'll have lost the weight I want to lose.
I stepped over boxes and piles of books to reach the bike, which sat in a dark corner. This corner had a musty smell, like an old church that hadn't been dusted since Queen Victoria was my age. A fake raccoon-fur hat someone had given my dad as a joke hung on the wall nearby.
The bike seat was too high for me, but I couldn't move it because it was screwed in place. Gripping the handlebars for support, I tried to heave my leg over the seat several times without success. I was becoming angry and sweaty, so I started breathing deeply, like I was having a baby, to calm myself down. "Hoo hoo hoo."
"Hilary!" shouted my mom. "Why are you making monkey noises?"
I froze. I knew that if I said, "It's nothing," she'd come down, and I didn't want her to think I needed help getting on a stationary bicycle. So I called, "I'm just playing a game."
I managed to lift myself on to the bike. I had to stretch to reach the pedals, but I finally did and started pumping. It was O.K. at first, but soon, my muscles felt like some psycho was using them as rubber bands. And some people actually do this for fun! What's wrong with them, I thought. I reached for the water bottle and tried to squirt some water in my mouth. Nothing but air came out. I'd forgotten to fill the bottle! I threw it away and continued to pump furiously. Objects on the wall began rattling, and I was making so many strange noises my mother must have thought a whole pack of monkeys was performing a conga line in the basement. I began to have visions of monkeys in spangly pink bikinis
kicking up their heels (did monkeys have heels, I wondered) on stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Suddenly my sweatband fell over my eyes. I didn't stop to fix it, though. You're going to pump for the full hour, not for fifty-nine minutes, I ordered myself. Instead, I tried nodding vigorously to get the sweatband to fall under my chin. It fell over my nose and I couldn't breathe. Then something dark and furry leapt on my head, covering my eyes and tickling my face like a bunch of feathers. I screamed, batting at the thing with one hand and pumping frantically, as if I could escape that way. I soon realized it was only my dad's hat, but I still couldn't get it off. Finally I stumbled off the bike and yanked the hat's tail away from my eyes.
I had no energy left to remove the hat, so I left it on and trudged upstairs. I passed my mom, who took one look at me and started to snicker. Ignoring her, I went into the kitchen to check the clock. I'd been on the bike five minutes.
So that was the end of my experiment with exercising.

EXCERPT:
I never cared to be an actress. Waltzing across the stage with all eyes on me wasn’t my style, nor was feigning confidence as a different character. I admired them really, the performers who could fool an audience into feeling and believing their words. The very best could pull people into their world within minutes, tugging on heart strings and wrapping the crowd around their little finger.
Turns out my mother was the true actress around here.
I lifted my eyes from my bowl of stew, a fleeting glance landing on Mom as she sipped wine from a goblet. Without even meeting my gaze, her words found me from across the table.
“I’ll take it as a compliment that you haven’t spoken since we sat down for dinner.” She positioned her goblet beside her placemat, careful and precise. Regardless, the red liquid sloshed from side to side, taking a minute to settle.
I tried to hide how my eyes widened. Like an ostrich burying its head in the sand, I bowed mine over my dinner, slipping the spoon into my mouth and forcing myself to swallow another bite. Tasteless, it hit my empty stomach like a punch to the gut. I would never pull this off.
“Are you feeling okay?” Mom asked. She cocked her head to the side, studying me. Her eyes bore into me like a magnifying glass, reading beyond the obvious signs of my discomfort. She could always see right through me.
I scrambled for some line of truth, knowing it was the only way I’d be able to disguise my lie. Stalling, I ran my napkin across my lips, still focusing on the carrots and potatoes inside my bowl. How could I talk to her when I could barely maintain eye contact?
“Does this have anything to do with Andre Steele?” Dad asked. Grateful for the interruption, I found comfort responding to my ally, though he had no idea how deceived he truly was. Until just hours ago, I hadn’t either.
“Um, sort of,” I said, my fingers clenching the napkin in my lap. I couldn’t picture Andre without seeing him with Emma, harboring my twin in his backyard pool house. I’d only just met her after our entire childhood apart, and now we were separated again with more secrets and lies. There would be a time for truth, but that time was not now. Not until we solidified a plan.
Mentioning Andre seemed to fit my unsteady behavior, though. Dad cleared his throat and exchanged a knowing look with Mom, who gave a tight-lipped smile in return. I needed to play along as truthfully as I could, which, considering Andre and I were still unsure about our relationship status, shouldn’t prove too difficult. So, out with the truth.
“Well, we did kiss the other day—” I paused with an exaggerated sigh. “Come on, Dad. Don’t make this more awkward with that face. You’re the one who asked,” I reminded him, not actually wanting to talk about Andre and me either. However, it seemed easier than explaining, “Oh, and by the way, the woman you married separated me from my identical twin and has been using us to run a social experiment.” I wasn’t sure I’d ever be equipped to navigate that conversation about the woman he loved and the mother I trusted.
Used to trust.
“So…” I continued in a hurry. “We kissed, but then I decided I didn’t want a boyfriend, so I put an end to it. Only… Dominic stopped by on the weekend and I was mad at Andre, so I kissed Dominic, too—” I stopped when Dad dropped his fork against his plate and then clamored to pick it up in a clumsy fashion. I bit my lip, wishing I were only fibbing about kissing Andre and my ex-boyfriend within twenty-four hours of each other. “It’s been a little confusing around here,” I finished, folding my arms against the table.
Mom made a curt noise that sounded like judgement to me, not that she had any room for that. “It sounds like we might need to set up a second visit with your therapist.”
“No, not Todd,” I moaned, a genuine response of humiliation and dread. The first sit-down with that uncomfortable man was enough. However, I’d have to give in. This apparent boy drama seemed to be working as the perfect detour from the truth. And the lies.
“Livvy,” Mom said, her tone softening as she used my childhood nickname. I met her eyes in surprise. She hardly ever called me that anymore. It wasn’t like her to coddle. “One session alone is not going to help you come to terms with understanding your adoption situation… Yes, I know,” she clarified. “I mean, how I raised you without actually adopting you. We have our differences in opinion, but I’m sure we can agree you suddenly chopping your hair off and kissing a new boy every night might be symptoms of something deeper beneath the surface.”
Ugh. The psychiatrist was back in the house, which was why she’d sent me to a therapist in the first place. She hadn’t wanted to wear her mom and psychiatrist hat at the same time. Little had I known back then that Mom wore multiple hats every day.
The client-focused psychiatrist.
The devoted mother.
The twisted social scientist running tests on separated identical twins.
My cheeks burned as images of facing Emma along the river leapt to the forefront of my mind, shadowed by her navy hoodie. Pale and afraid. Nervous to my touch. I’d left her tonight, seated on the edge of the bed inside Andre’s pool house, her eyes wide and uncertain. Andre would take care of her, but I hated how the sister I’d only met hours ago lay just a few miles away from my reach. We had so much to catch up on. So much to try to understand, and a plan to devise.
“Fine, I’ll go see Todd again,” I said, conceding with less fight than normal—anything to keep this conversation at bay. On second thought, maybe I was conceding too fast, raising suspicion. That didn’t sound like me. “But don’t go pulling one of your favors again and getting me in tomorrow,” I hurried to add, crossing my arms for added effect. I slouched into the back of my seat. “Give me a week or so to figure out what I want to talk with him about. Deal?” I raised my eyebrows, hoping I’d pulled off my usual stubbornness mixed with compliance.
Dad cleared his throat. “That sounds fair enough. Don’t you think, Evelyn?”
Mom smiled softly at him and took a deep breath. “I suppose so.” She looked my way to say, “I’ll call Todd in the morning and see when he is available. No rush,” she promised. She stood up, gathering dishes from the table, and then disappeared into the kitchen.
At last, the charade was over. I jumped up, taking mine and Dad’s bowl to the sink. I let the water run over them. After a quiet minute, Mom’s hand landed on my shoulder. I let her touch press into me, stifling the urge to knock her hand away.
“I hope you know you can talk to me,” she said. “No matter what’s going on.”
I swallowed. At this point, there was no use professing I was just fine. She was letting me know she saw right through me, a skill I once considered more sentimental than manipulative. I could only do my best to conceal my knowledge for a while longer and hope she chalked my uneasy behavior up to the original adoption issues. Or boy problems.
“I love you, Olivia.” She squeezed my arm.
I unclenched my teeth. “I love you, too, Mom.”

EXCERPT:
"At least he does not resemble the back end of a boar," Dayna whispered.
I shot my sister a quick nod of agreement and then covertly turned back to peer at my future husband who was currently conversing with my father. After our morning ride, my sister and I had found a hiding spot behind some large drapes just to the left of the room occupied by our guests. It afforded us the surreptitious ability to listen and watch with the two kings interact. Thomas had taken his leave, but not before he informed me of what he thought about our childish behavior. I did not care if I was being childish. I was not ready to meet King Cathal just yet, at least not without a little advance warning of what I would be dealing with.
"You are correct," I murmured back. "He is not ugly, but his handsomeness is marred by that tight lipped frown. He looks cruel."
I had been surprised to find that my future husband was not nearly as old as I had thought he would be. If I had to guess, I would put him at eight and thirty, or, at the very oldest, two and forty. His hair was dark, cut close to his head. He had deep green eyes, a hawkish nose, and thin lips that seemed to hold a perpetual scowl. Standing at a little over six feet, King Cathal was lean but obviously muscular. Yes, he was handsome, but the cold, detached look in his eyes ruined any favor I might have found in him.
"Do you think it hurts to hold his face like that?" Dayna asked.
I bit my bottom lip to keep from laughing. "Perhaps he was just born that way."
"Tis a shame to be so handsome and yet such a pompous ass."
"Shh," I chastised. "That pompous ass could have your head if he felt your offense warranted it."
"Father would not allow me to be beheaded, Allete" Dayna assured me. "I am his favorite."
I made a motion with my hand to quiet her so we could hear what it was our father was saying to the king of Tara.
"She has to know by now that I have arrived," King Cathal was saying. His words came out clipped and low.
"Allete tends to have her own mind about things. I am sure she will join us when she is ready," King Albric said, attempting to placate his irritated guest.
"And who allows such independent thinking?" Cathal challenged. "A woman should know her place." His pointed look was aimed at the queen who stood quietly next to King Albric.
Allete was sure her mother was going to smack the rude man, but a subtle hand placed on her mother's wrist held her in place.
"I understand your frustration, Cathal, but please be considerate of Allete's situation. She is being courted by a man she has never met. She will be expected to leave with that man in a month's time and travel to a place that is not her home, where she has no friends, no family. She deserves time to adjust." King Albric, ever the diplomat, attempted to ease his counterpart's temper. Based on Cathal's pinched lips, however, his efforts were wasted.
"Could you at least send for her?" The other king asked in a more civil tone. And then added, "Please," all be it a bit begrudgingly.
I snatched Dayna's sleeve and gave it a gentle tug, indicating it was time for us to go. Like mice being hunted by a cat, we scurried from our hiding place and snuck to my bedchamber. We had barely made it inside when there was a knock at the door.
"Enter," I said, attempting to keep my voice from sounding breathless.
Lidia entered. The look on her face was one of trepidation.
"The king requests your presence," my handmaiden said in a soft voice.
I smiled at the girl. "Chin up, Lidia. All will be well."
Lidia let out a huff, her manners momentarily forgotten. "You have not met the man. He is positively awful." Her hand flew to her mouth and her eyes widened. "Forgive my frankness."
Dayna laughed. "Allete would never punish you, especially not for telling the truth." She lowered her voice conspiratorially. "We already saw him. We spied on them." Dayna winked, looking completely unrepentant.
Lidia lowered her hand and made an 'O' shape with her mouth.
I straightened my dress and pulled my shoulders back. "Might as well face the music. I doubt he is going to turn around and sail back home without me."

Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia (Review)

Peyton has plans, she has dreams. She wants to be the best soccer player ever, and she is working for that dream. That is, at least, until her boyfriend throws her down the stairs in an angry fit. This shatters her heart, her dreams, and her knee. Fleeing to her uncles home to find sanctuary as she heals. At the same time as healing her knee, she begins to work on healing her shattered heart as well. Along the way she meets Reed, a handsome kick-boxer with a heart of gold, and she struggles o know if she should trust and love again.
Very well written, and with a strong narrative voice. Broken Beautiful Hearts is a cute and mildly intense story of a High Schoolers Peyton and Reed. It covers the topic of doping, domestic violence and of what real and true love should look like. I did find there was one scene that felt incredibly unnecessary to the plot, which was the sex scene. I felt it was uncomfortable graphic for a book aimed at this age group and it didn't really further the plot or grow the characters in any way. It could have been cut and I actually probably would have love the story more then I did. Now that aside, I found I really liked how the opening chapters of the novel gave the story such a feeling of intensity and immense. It helped the rest of the story feel like it was zooming by faster then it would have if the opening was less dramatic or intense. All in all, I did enjoy reading Broken Beautiful Hearts and give it the rating of FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!!!
