Bruja Born (Brooklyn Brujas #2) by Zoraida Córdova (Review)

The second instalment in the Brooklyn Brujas series, Bruja Born takes over the story of the three original bruja sisters, but switches focus to Lula, the vain healer of the sisters. After the events of Labyrinth Lost, the once stunning Lula has a great scar across her face. That, mixed with her trauma, has made her unable to return to how she used to be, to the point it begins to effect her relationship with Mak, her boyfriend. After a tragic accident, Lula attempts to save Mak, but instead unleashes a zombies apocalypse onto the world, getting on the bad side of the Deos (gods). One cannot challenge death and come out unscathed.
Well written and dramatic, Bruja Born takes a dramatic turn and get dark and bloody. Unlike the "everyone lives" plot of its predecessor Labyrinth Lost, Bruja Born takes a darker path and contains a lot of blood, death and casualties. It also expands on the lore of the first book and leaves plenty of material for future novels. We find out that the world of Brooklyn Brujas contains not only Brujas and witches, but werewolves, fae, vamps, mer-people, and shapeshifters. This world expansion was very interesting and fun, leaving me wanting more. Lula herself was a very well rounded and developed character that I felt so deeply for. I so wanted her to succeed in redeeming and saving Mak. I grew to love both of their characters, and it took me along for the ride of their story. I'm very excited for the third instalment. In the end, I like Bruja Born and give it the honest rating of FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!
