by Rita Webb

Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
The wind calls her to play.
Will she listen?
I was a nameless child abandoned on the temple doorsteps.
Soul, the gods called me. So they named me Nephecia.
My plans don’t include marriage to some silly nobleman. When I come of age, I will take vows and devote my life to serving the goddess of Light. As a priestess, a daughter of the goddess, I’ll make the world a better place.
The summer before my eighteenth birthday, an oracle arrives with word from the gods: I must leave the only home, the only family, I’ve ever known, to marry a stranger in a foreign land.
There must be some mistake.
If I follow my own plans, I’ll disobey the very goddess I want to serve. But how can I trust the gods have my best interest at heart?

Q&A with author Rita Webb
Where did you get the idea for Daughter of the Goddess?
My favorite Greek myth is the story of Eros and Psyche. I think it’s the only Greek myth I read with anywhere close to a happy ending, even if there was a great deal of turmoil getting there.
The philosopher in me always wondered what a soul really was. When someone says, “That music is full of soul,” what does that mean?
So Nephecia epitomizes what I believe soul means. I took her out of Ancient Greece and put her into a world of my own making.
How did the name “Psyche” become “Nephecia”?
I searched other languages for the word “Soul” and found nephesh in Hebrew.
How did the name “Eros” become “Gabin”?
Gabin is a variation of Gabriel (according to my baby name book), that means “Hero of God.” I remember something about it meaning “Beloved by God” too.
Why do you write stories?
I have 3 daughters, ages 15, 13, and 11, and I want them to grow up believing in their dreams. The only way I can see that happening is if I believe in my own.
What’s your secret to success?
My husband. He believes in me, and when I’m discouraged, he never lets me give up.
What one piece of advice do you have for new writers?
Read, write, study, write some more. Never give up. Okay, that’s 5 pieces of advice.

Author Bio:
Leaving the house to go to school, I had schoolbooks spilling out of one hand, the other holding my place in a Nancy Drew novel, and bunny slippers still on my feet. My mom was a wee bit upset.
I haven't changed much. Still always have a book (or two) in my hand or creating stories in my head, and although I don't have any bunny slippers, I love writing in my jammies and snuggly slipper socks.
With my husband TJ (my own cuddly werewolf), I home-school our three girls, who keep us busy with art, science projects, books to read, dance classes, and walks about the park.

Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Our Dark Stars by Audrey Grey and Krystal Wade (Review)

A lost kingdom, a hunted princess, androids, AIs, and killers. Princess Talia is lost in time and space. She is supposed to be dead, dead as her people, dead as her kingdom and dead as her family. Adrift in the universe, when she is finally saved, nobody knows who she is and the new galaxy is compleatly changed. Androids have taken over and humans are now their slaves, if they were even left alive. Talia has to fix this, she has to save her people and fix her mistake that launched it all. Intermixed with romance and adventure, Our Dark Stars tells a story that traverses time and the universe.
From the get go, the story jumps from the past to the present fairly frequently. It was a little jarring, making some parts of the story feel more like fluff to balance the past and present parts then anything. I found Talia to be an okay main character. She was not very unique, but she was in no way a badly written character. Story wise, the romance was pretty weak and the inter-character relations were also just meh. Nothing terrible, but nothing great either. I also noticed that there were many exciting ways the story could have gone that would have been mind blowing and exciting, but it ended up being a mostly predictable plot. That aside though, it was still pretty fun to read, and because of that, I give Our Dark Stars FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!

Zero Repeat Forever (The Nahx Invasions #1) by Gabrielle Prendergast (Review)

Dark, heart wrenching and emotional, Zero Repeat Forever takes places in the end of the world. Aliens have attacked and almost all of the humans are dead. Darted with alien poison and left where they fall. In this world, a young teenage girl and a Nahx are alone in the world, and when their paths cross they will have to face their natures and the nature of love and loss.
I thought I would hate this novel. Right from the first chapter I found it immature, boring and depressing. I was really struggling to motivate myself to continue reading. Little did I know that the story would take such an emotionally intense switch that would hook me and leave me crying. This story is without a doubt a tragedy. It is not the happiest book you could ever read, but if you want to read about true TRUE love I totally recommend it. I found it ripped out my heart and directed the meaning of true love, and how it is shown. I also found many connections to Beauty and the Beast throughout the story. Its a lot darker, but I found I liked Zero Repeat Forever for the same reasons I love Beauty and the Beast. It showed uncontrolled and unadulterated love. I loved it. I give Zero Repeat Forever the rating of FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!

Your One & Only by Adrianne Finlay (Review)

The world has ended and there are only clones left over. Well, clones and Jack, the last living natural and normal human. The clones made Jack to resurrect much needed parts of their human pasts. For Jack though, this means being the odd man out of the community in the realest sense possible. A complete loaner and outcast, Jack beings to feel for one of the only clones that has ever been kind to him, Althea-310. Althea has always felt a little different from her clone sisters, and when she starts to care for Jack, those differences become more and more obvious to her. Together they will search for meaning, safety and maybe even love.
Very intense and not always in the right way, Your One & Only had some mixed content and storytelling. It went from way too slow to passing very fast over important moments and details. It also had what felt like unnecessary sexual relations that really did nothing for the story and just made the readers more and more uncomfortable. I will give the story this, they did present a lot of moral conundrums. It makes the reader think about what makes us human, when does the greater good justify horrors and the morality of cloning and genetic modification. With all of this amounted for, I give Your One & Only the rating of THREE AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!!!

Berserker (Berserker #1) by Emmy Laybourne (Review)

Hanne is a Berserker. She goes into violent killing rages that cannot be stopped whenever the people she loves are threatened. And as much as she wants to protect them, she hates the killing, she hates being a killer. When things go off the rails, she and her family must flee to search for her uncle, her only hope to learn how to control her "gift". Along the way she and her siblings flee to the wild west and meet a handsome and honourable cowboy that will help them flee in their mad dash to safety.
I surprisingly got really into this story. It took a moment to get into it, but all things considered, I became invested in Hanne and her siblings fairly quickly. I also liked that the world was structured around a key set of rules and myths, and actually held to them... (for the most part). They follow the rules enough at least that I was successfully able to find my bearings in the universe and experience it as if its mythology was actually moderately realistic. This story was definitely character driven and that felt like a major strength of its story telling. The readers are really led to feel a lot for these characters and to feel their pains and triumphs. The characters were also very dynamic, from the passive big (in stature) brother, to the snippy and selfish younger sister. These characters were more real then what you would find in some contemporary literature, and for that reason as well as many others, I give Berserker the rating of FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!!!
