Reign the Earth (The Elementae #1) by A.C. Gaughen (Review)

Shalia is an earth elemental, and she just got married to the king of the very people who want to murder all of her kind. She made this sacrifice to save her family and her people in the desert. If she doesn't, her now husband would wipe them off the face of the earth in war. As time passes, the evil in the King's heart becomes more and more apparent, as her attraction to his kinder and more noble brother grows. To survive she will have to walk a tight rope between truth and lies.
I didn't love it. Reign the Earth was unexpectedly dark and depressing. It contained many uncomfortable topics like: domestic abuse, sexual abuse, murder, torcher, child killing, genocide and infanticide. Needless to say, I was not expecting the true level of how dark this story would end up being. I went into this expecting a romance and a take-no-prisoners kind of heroine. What I got was violence, fear and no real fight back on the behalf of the heroine. Really, for the most part she felt like she was there to get saved and to be nocked around, which was not what I signed up for. That aside, the writing as a whole is fine, just dark. So ultimately, I would give Reign the Earth the rating of THREE AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!
